LifeHacking, and Ethical Thought in Problem Solving LifeHacking, and Ethical Thought in Problem Solving

I was recently at a stress management conference and there was a panel on ethics and problems solving. One of the vendors there was The New York City Chair Massage Company – www.eventschairmassage.com

This is what I learned talking to a chair massage therapist who deals with ethical issues constantly as one of the best massage therapists in New York City.

Some problems come about because we don’t understand the distinction between what is ethically right and wrong.

When I ask people about the difference between ethics and morality most do not have a distinction between these two concepts.

This distinction came to me when  I was teaching a course on hypnosis,  NLP*, stress management and leadership and someone asked if manipulating people was ethical.

This question requires more than just a yes or no answer. In my approach to problem solving and decision-making ethics and morality are different though for many social scientists they are interchangeable. It is generally agreed in most of the social sciences that morality is the study of what  makes  actions  right  and  wrong. The word ‘ethics’ is commonly used interchangeably with ‘morality’. I have always found value in applying a distinction between an individual’s sense of right and wrong (ethics) as opposed to a “group’s” definition. Ethics, in a personal sense of right and wrong may go against a morality imposed from the group onto the individual.

When strategizing to solve a problem, ethical behavior is a reflection of a person’s intent to act whereas morality becomes the rule of the game as imposed on all the players. This distinction becomes important when exploring ideas such as fair play or cheating.

There are many theories concerning morality and ethics. The practical element  of  all  this can become very tricky, and there are many ethical theories that deal with  complex  issues  related  to  perspective, duty, obligation,  personal or cultural values, codes of conduct  and social mores.

This is especially so when one is forced into a Zero Sum Game* where there can only be one winner.

What is a Problem-REALLY?

We often speak of problems but in reality there is no single definition of what a problem is. Our company www.events chairmassage.com solves some problems by using corporate chair massage to get rid of headaches and backaches.

massage-389716__180.jpg

Other  definitions of a problem  include:

  • Any situation which is unwelcome or harmful, and which needs to be dealt with and overcome.
  • An inquiry into some question to which the answer is not obvious.
  • Some process we have chosen to engage in that is difficult to achieve or accomplish and can be described in many different ways.

The most common words used to define a problem include; jig saw puzzle, trouble, worry, hiccup, setback, catch, predicament, stumbling block, plight, misfortune, mishap, misadventure, dilemma, quandary, headache, nightmare, snag, hitch, drawback, obstacle, hurdle, nuisance, bother, pest, irritant, thorn in one’s side/flesh, vexation, drag, pain, riddle, difficult and pain in the neck.

Many of the guests at our B & B and Retreat center are looking for skills to solve problems.   The   concept  of  “a problem”   can  be   observed  from a number of perspectives. On a basic level, we can categorize a problem by;

light-311119__340.png

  • The type of problem it is;
  • The cause of the problem;
  • The level of difficulty required to solve the problem.

There is no one approach that is best for categorizing problems. Various problem-solving models will work best in specific situations even as many categorizing systems have been supplanted by other models or overlap with them. Nevertheless, the underlying principles remain valid – a problem is an unwelcome situation that needs to be dealt with and overcome. One thing is clear; we cannot allow a negative attitude, an attachment to short term gratification, resignation or disillusionment to interfere with the process of solving a problem.

One of my mentors often said, “To be disillusioned you must first have illusions”. Many problems arise because we project our own agendas onto the agendas of others with whom we feel a sense of rapport or connection. In the end, when we do this, we are often disappointed. Often it just a big puzzle.

pieces-of-the-puzzle-592798__340.jpg

Often what we perceive to be clarity of thought is nothing more than wishful thinking. In order to solve a problem with the least expenditure of energy, there are a number of things to keep in mind. To begin with it is essential that one recognize that without precision, focus and timing i.e. a system, one will struggle without reason. In addition, most systems have their own critical times and resonances. The key to effectiveness in solving problems is to work with the natural timing or rhythm of a system rather than in opposition to it.

One of the basic rules of physics is that it takes more force to apply the same pressure to a wide area than to a smaller specific point.  This applies to problem solving as well.

What is Murphy’s Law and How Can You Lifehack It?

What is Murphy’s Law and How Can You Lifehack It?

In my corporate stress management business  – www.EventsChairMassage.com – We are always dealing with small challenges that can grown into big problems. This is what Murphy’s law means to us.

People often use the term “Murphy’s Law” someone flippantly. More often than not it is an excuse for someone who is a lazy thinker or who is in the clutches of some form of cognitive bias.

To be specific, Murphy’s law is an adage or epigram that is typically stated as: Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

It is a way of describing the perceived perversity of the universe.

The concept is as old as humanity and can be used specifically to increase or decrease effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity depending on the view and perspective of the individual applying the concept.

Before the term “Murphy’s Law even came into usage there was a version of the law, not yet generalized or bearing that name, in a report by Alfred Holt at an 1877 meeting of an engineering society.

Relating the concept to engineering the report promoted the concept that anything that can go wrong at sea generally does go wrong sooner or later, so it is not to be wondered that owners prefer the safe to the scientific …. Sufficient stress can hardly be laid on the advantages of simplicity. The human factor cannot be safely neglected in planning machinery. If attention is to be obtained, the engine must be such that the engineer will be disposed to attend to it.

Mathematician Augustus De Morgan wrote on June 23, 1866:  “The first experiment already illustrates a truth of the theory, well confirmed by practice, what-ever can happen will happen if we make trials enough.

This concept appears in many different areas of life. For example, the British stage magician Nevil Maskelyne wrote in 1908:

“It is an experience common to all men to find that, on any special occasion, such as the production of a magical effect for the first time in public, everything that can go wrong will go wrong. Whether we must attribute this to the malignity of matter or to the total depravity of inanimate things, whether the exciting cause is hurry, worry, or what not, the fact remains.

In 1948, humorist Paul Jennings coined the term resistentialism, a jocular play on resistance and existentialism, to describe “seemingly spiteful behavior manifested by inanimate objects”, where objects that cause problems (like lost keys or a runaway bouncy ball) are said to exhibit a high degree of malice toward humans.

The contemporary form of Murphy’s law goes back as far as 1952, as an epigraph to a mountaineering book by John Sack, who described it as an “ancient mountaineering adage”:

Anything that can possibly go wrong, does.

Fred R. Shapiro, the editor of the Yale Book of Quotations, has shown that in 1952 the adage was called “Murphy’s law” in a book by Anne Roe, quoting an unnamed physicist: he described [it] as “Murphy’s law or the fourth law of thermodynamics” (actually there were only three last I heard) which states: “If anything can go wrong, it will.”

Ultimately, the person with an interest in becoming more effective, efficient and productive and who know how to use game Theory and game based models can both reduce the likelihood Murphy’s Law taking place sooner rather than later and may even predict when it is likely to take place.

This fine article explores how to use Murphy’s Law to prosper in all areas of your life.

Tips for Wellness Coaches

Many of those who read the RealUGuru blog are Wellness Coaches, consultants or health professionals. From 1973 to 2007 I had a private practice as a Naturopathic Practitioner in NYC. As part of this practice I had a number of Medical Doctors working with me so that I could stay on the “right side” of the law.

As part of my work we had a well-designed system of client protocols. It seems today that many Wellness Coaches have not been taught this. Here are some ideas concerning this challenge.

Client Protocols

  • Functional assessment – This includes traditional laboratory tests; specialized tests that quantify hormone and neurotransmitter levels; structural and postural analysis, Chinese Pulse Reading and various mental and emotional assessments.
  • Analysis and interpretation – There are two areas of inquiry required here.
  1. A review of specific symptoms.
  2. A review of testing and assessment results.

To be most effective here a team approach is recommended. This might include physicians, energy healing practitioners, nutritionists, researchers, somatic experts, naturopaths, somatic movement specialists, bodyworkers, life coaches and mental health professionals.

  • Therapy – This would be a clinical protocol that might include specific nutritional therapy and meal planning, herbal medicine, aromatherapy, homeopathy, Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, Chiropractic and/or Osteopathic Manipulation, seated or on-site chair massage, Somatic Movement Re-education, emotional counseling and life coaching, Hand-on Healing (Reiki, Polarity), meditation etc.

The Healing Program

Every healing program consists of three phases

  1. Entry level: The goal here is to establish a client’s baseline levels and existing chemical, structural and emotional imbalances. This is followed by a therapeutic protocol from which clinical responses can be monitored.
  2. Rebalancing: Here the client is retested to monitor the initial protocol and make adjustments as needed. This needs to be done every six to nine weeks during this phase which may last from three to nine months.
  3. Maintenance: When function has been restored, symptoms alleviated and retesting indicates that chemical, structural and emotional imbalances have been corrected then annual or semi-annual testing needs to be conducted to maintain the clients state of health.

Corporate Chair Massage and Worse Case-Scenarios

Much of my work in Stress management work in NYC involves corporate chair massage, also known as onsite massage of seated massage.

Many companies create holistic and wellness fairs to educate their employees and give them more skills for effective decision making. Any type of mobile massage can provide that positive edge that increases productivity and reduces absenteeism because physical health influences mental clarity and corporate chair massage is an effective approach to ending the spiral of stress  though merging the mind and body.

This work is especially useful for those dealing with worse-case scenarios.

A worst-case scenario is a concept in risk management wherein the planner, in planning for potential disasters, considers the most severe possible outcome that can reasonably be projected to occur in a given situation. Conceiving of worst-case scenarios is a common form of strategic planning, specifically scenario planning, to prepare for and minimize contingencies that could result in accidentsquality problems, or other issues.

The worst-case scenario is “one of the most commonly used alternative scenarios”. A risk manager may request “a conservative risk estimate representing a worst-case scenario” in order to determine the latitude they may exercise in planning steps to reduce risks. Generally, a worst-case scenario “is settled upon by agreeing that a given worst case is bad enough. However, it is important to recognize that no worst-case scenario is truly without potential nasty surprises”.  In other words, “[a] “worst-case scenario” is never the worst case”, both because situations may arise that no planner could reasonably foresee  and because a given worst-case scenario is likely to consider only contingencies expected to arise in connection with a particular disaster. The worst-case scenario devised by a seismologist might be a particularly bad earthquake, and the worst-case scenario devised by a meteorologist might be a particularly bad hurricane, but it is unlikely that either of them will devise a scenario where a particularly bad storm occurs at the same time as a particularly bad earthquake.

The definition of a worst-case scenario varies by the field to which it is being applied. For example, in environmental engineering“, “[a] worst-case scenario is defined as the release of the largest quantity of a regulated substance from a single vessel or process line failure that results in the greatest distance to an endpoint”. In this field, “[a]s in other fields, the worst-case scenario is a useful device when low probability events may result in a catastrophe that must be avoided even at great cost, but in most health risk assessments, a worst-case scenario is essentially a type of bounding estimate”. In computer science, the best, worst, and average case of a given algorithm express what the resource usage is at least, at most and on average, respectively. For many individuals, a worst case scenario is one that would result in their own death.

The story below is an example of a worst case scenario where clear thinking saved a life in a worst case scenario.

Effective Lifehacking

If you are looking for shortcuts to getting things done, this is the blog for you!

assembly-850845__340

There is a saying that the truth you ignore will come back to bite you on the butt! As you address specific obstacles, bottlenecks or constraints, be prepared to subordinate any further steps you plan to take in your lifehacking process until the issue or any other bottleneck is resolved.

abstract-1861459__340

Discovering obstacles, bottlenecks or constraints (OB and C) that are slowing down your lifehack is an important skill to develop. This basic skill can be developed through the use of what are called assessment tools. The most popular low tech approach to assessments is the questionnaire.  Questionnaires, can help you recognize your strengths and weaknesses as well as previously unknown and unrecognized “OB and Cs”. Once these have been isolated they can be eliminated or compensated for.  This will  result in a shifting of the bottleneck. Without the obstacle and the bottleneck to slow the process, the lifehack will be completed successfully.

In previous Hacks on bottlenecks, we learned that a lifehacker needs to understand cause and effect and have the ability to recognize and isolate an obstacle or bottleneck when it appears. There are five key steps for eliminating obstacles, bottlenecks or constraints. These are to:

how-to-hack-your-life-front-757x1024

  • Identify the obstacles and bottleneck by evaluating all ELRs.
  • Identify obstacles, and constraint to increase efficiency.
  • Minimize all other resources that are connected to the obstacle and the bottleneck.
  • Expand the useful properties of the obstacle as a way of eliminating the bottleneck or at the very least increasing the capacity of the bottleneck.
  • Regularly repeat the process since a new obstacle may arise to create a new bottleneck that may require further action.

Through assessing, isolating and removing “OB and Cs” you are isolating the root factor for the problem.

Lifehack!  In the end you will save, money, save time and create greater happiness.

Think and Grow Rich with these Money Hacks

puzzle-1721271__340

A financial lifehack (or life hack) refers to any trick, shortcut, skill, or novelty method that increases productivity and efficiency concerning how you profit from personal resources including money,  in all walks of life. The term originated with computer experts who suffer from information overload or those with a playful curiosity in the ways they can accelerate their workflow in ways other than programming but has since become part of ordinary language especially around millennials.

  dollar-1362244__340

Here are two of my favorite money life-hacks

  1. The Track Your Investments Hack

Every once in a while a story appears in the paper describing how some celebrity has been ripped off by their assistant, accountant or investment broker.  It is often said the “the devil is in the details” and this is especially so concerning personal finance. On the macro-level it is important to track your investments. This is how you put this hack into action:

  1. Maintain detailed records of any transactions you’ve made with a broker.
  2. Now look at your monthly brokerage reports.
  3. Compare the two.
  4. If there are any discrepancies contact your broker immediately to discuss and resolve them.
  5. To paraphrase the Taoist philosopher Lao Tzu who says, “It is easier to solve a problem when it is small,”  hacker philosophy is based on the idea that it is easier to clear up errors when they become evident.  If you keep track of your investments they will become evident sooner rather than later.

checkbook-688352__340

The Save Time Checkbook Balancing Hack

One of the busiest wastes of time is balancing your checkbook to the last penny. When entering a transaction in your checkbook the most efficient and productive approach is to round your checks up to the next dollar. In twelve months you’ll probably end up within $20. of the actual balance and you’ll be the one who has gained.

Game Theory =A Survival Hack – Create a Basic Disaster Supply Kit

rug-logo

(Also Known as the Lifehack Guru)

A few years back the area I live in was hit by back flooding. My home sitting on a mountain was spared but the flooding was bad below our area that FEMA came in. I volunteered to help people ”dig” out. Many were unprepared for a disaster. Are you?

Here is a list of what you need to have in order to be prepared for a disaster.

towel-1774910__340

A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items:

  1. Fill a fireproof box.Items should include identification and other important cards, financial records, family photos and emergency cash in small bills.
  2. Design a disaster plan.It should include whom to contact and where to meet family members in case of an emergency. All family members should know the plan and the numbers to call.
  3. Make a list.Include emergency phone numbers such as 911, the local fire department, poison control, and rescue and ambulance services. Keep it in a place where you can find it fast — like on the refrigerator door.
  4. Create a go-kit.Pack a sturdy, easy-to-carry container, such as a backpack or a suitcase on wheels, and keep it in an accessible place. To find a list of what it should include, go toready.gov/kit.
  5. Turn off.Know how to shut off valves for gas, oil, water and your home’s main electrical supply. Put tags on these valves so you can find them quickly, but have a professional turn them back on again, the Federal Emergency Management Agency warns.
  6. Have food and water handy.Store three days’ worth of nonperishable food for each family member, plus a gallon of water daily per person for drinking and sanitation. Canned food, peanut butter and energy bars are all good. Important: Don’t forget a can opener.
  7. Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both.
  8. Flashlight and extra batteries.
  9. First aid kit.
  10. Whistle to signal for help.
  11. Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place.
  12. Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation.
  13. Wrench or pliers toturn off utilities.
  14. A Swiss Army type knife containing many different tools.
  15. Manual can opener for food.
  16. Local maps.
  17. Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger.
  18. A small tent to sleep outside if your house becomes unsafe.
  19. Plastic ponchos (available at most dollar stores).
  20. Extra cash in case ATMs are inaccessible.

Big Data, Game Theory and Lifehacking

In order to become a successful lifehacker you have to merge hack thinking with Applied Game Thinking.

news-1511502__180

A lifehack is an old concept refitted with a new name – a strategy or technique adopted in order to manage one’s time and daily activities in a more efficient way. Essentially it is a merging of systematic thrift and frugality merged with time management and priority planning. Each hack is like a chess moves towards solving a problem.

king-1745093__180

Applied Game Thinking, is a system of strategizing to maximize one’s potential at the lowest possible cost. These game strategies are often created as a response to a competitive situation where a “player” in the game of life is faced with complex challenges, problems, obstacles and constraints (CPOC) Applied Game Thinking is a strongly influenced and loosely applied take on Game Theory which has garnered researchers over a dozen Noble Prizes. When you are able to merge lifehacks with applied game thinking as a foundation you will be able to troubleshoot virtually any challenge.

In the end you will save, money, save time and create greater happiness.

Here is a ”Big Data” Hack:

big-data-1084656__180

The more effective you are at gathering information and trading it for non-cash resources like influence, or time,  the less cash you need to spend in order to get the things you need. The hack here is to create and apply a simple but effective system for gathering, organizing, and using information – essentially asking the right questions, of the right people at the right time!

Investing and Game Theory

Question: What is the best way to start investing using Game Theory if you have limited financial resources?

Lewis Harrison answers:  As in any other domain using game theory to invest involves knowing how to strategize. Game theory is “the study of mathematical models of conflict and cooperation between intelligent rational decision-makers.” Game theory is mainly used in economics, investing, political science, and psychology, as well as logic, computer science, biology and poker.

king-1745093__180

Let’s begin by exploring what it means to be an investor. To invest is to allocate money (or sometimes another resource, such as time, space, information or influence) in the expectation of some benefit in the future. In finance, the expected future benefit from investment is called a return (to investment). The return may consist of capital gain and/or investment income, including dividends,  interest, rental income etc. The economic return to an investment is the appropriately discounted value of the future returns to the investment.

Investment generally results in acquiring an asset, also called an investment. If the asset is available at a price worth investing, it is normally expected either to generate income, or to appreciate in value, so that it can be sold at a higher price (or both).

Investors generally expect higher returns from riskier investments. Financial assets range from low-risk, low-return investments, such as high-grade government bonds, to those with higher risk and higher expected commensurate reward, such as emerging markets stock investments.

Investors, particularly novices, are often advised to adopt an investment strategy and diversify their portfolio.

Diversification has the statistical effect of reducing overall risk.

To be an effective investor there are three elements that one must master:

  1. Knowing how to connect the dots accurately: We live in an interdisciplinary world. And the factors that make something a good or bad investment are complex. If you are well read in a wide range of areas you will come up with a more expansive understanding of these factors and ask a wider set of questions. This will lead to better choices as well as solutions to investment problems.
  2. Information and Influence: If your financial resources are limited you can leverage qualities like time, space and information to get you access to game changers, influencers and other “power-players.” The key element in this is getting information and merging it with clear critical thinking skills. You need to be reading the daily newspaper including specific columns. I follow the BBC, Al Jazeera, CNN, Fox News, the NY Times, the Washington Post, and most of all the Economist. I also follow various news feeds such as Quartz and Digg.
  3. Break out of you own Cognitive Biases. Acognitive bias is a mistake in reasoning, evaluating, remembering, or other cognitive process, often occurring as a result of holding onto one’s preferences and beliefs regardless of contrary information. Cognitive biases will effect investment decisions because they relate to memory, reasoning, and decision-making. The more informed you are and the more you network among those with similar beliefs and interests the more cognitive bias is likely to influence your thinking. This means that in order to be an effective investor you must break out of the box and step out of the bubble into new ways of seeing the investing market-place.
