Successful Lifehacking Requires a Strong Foundation

I was recently at a Chair Massage conference in NYC.  I talked about being effective and efficient as a life hacker.

I sat waiting to get one of those on-site corporate chair massages from www.eventschairmassage.com I got into a conversation with someone who asked me,

“How does one create wealth as a lifehacker?

How does one find the best approaches to greater efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity? The best lifehacks also create greater self-awareness.”  I responded “before anything else you need a strong foundation.

Let me explain:

In the early 1990s, I spent a winter in the Southern Catskill Mountains of New York State.  My family owned a small cabin and I had planned on going into seclusion and engaging in some ruthless introspection through the very cold, very snowy winter

The Catskills are well known in American culture, both as the setting for many 19th-century Hudson River School paintings and as the favored destination for urban vacationers from New York City in the mid-20th century. The region’s many large resorts gave countless young stand-up comedians an opportunity to hone their craft. As a college student, I would often run the spot light for the late show at Kutsher’s Country Club.

In addition, to all of this,  the Catskills have long been a haven for artists, musicians, and writers, especially in and around the town of Woodstock.

In the early 1950s – the 1970s many world champion boxers set up training camps in these resort hotels and many of these places became celebrity hangouts. By the 1990s most of the hotels had gone belly-up however a few remained. One was the Pines Hotel in South Fallsburg. There wasn’t much going on there since the hotel was on its last legs but I liked to use the Health Club and so I got myself a part-time job as a “Sports Massage Therapist”.

This happened just about the time Riddick Bowe and Rock Newman showed up. Riddick Lamont Bowe (born August 10, 1967) had won a silver medal in the super heavyweight division in boxing at the1988 Olympic Games. After turning professional, Bowe became a two-time world heavyweight champion, having first won the WBAWBC and IBF titles in 1992 to become the undisputed heavyweight champion.

Bowe became the first fighter to knock down and defeat Evander Holyfield when he claimed the undisputed world heavyweight title in 1992.

Rock Newman is a sort of  “RENAISSANCE MAN” who had been Captain of his Howard University Baseball team for 3 years, where he was selected as an All-American. After his graduation, he was enshrined into the Inaugural Class of the Sports Hall of Fame as one of the most outstanding athletes in Howard University history. Newman had done it all. He had been a very successful salesman, had been an award winning counselor and later became a top rated radio talk shows in the Washington DC metropolitan area where he interviewed people from all walks of life.

Rock had been involved in the careers of several champions, including guiding Riddick Bowe to the undisputed Heavyweight Championship of the World. In November of 1992, Rock negotiated the largest compensation package for an athlete in sports history. Securing a deal with HBO/Time Warner and Caesars World that exceeded $100 million dollars in potential revenue for Bowe.

So here I was, living the monk’s life at an old dying Borsht Belt Hotel with the heavyweight champion of the world and his “handler.”

Each day I would go to training camp and watch Bowe spar with various partners, many of them highly ranked in the world of boxing. Newman was a very pleasant, very focused and extremely intense. I would watch how he directed and guided Bowe. He focused a lot on Bowe’s feet. This surprised me – I assumed that he would focus more on boxing techniques and defense.

Then I remembered something my friend Marty Kalminson once said to me when we were playing basketball in a 24-hour gym in Queens. “It’s all in the feet. As long as you are dribbling the ball the ball isn’t going anywhere that your feet aren’t going”. It made sense.

Years later, when I was deeply involved with the study of game based thinking and game theory I heard this again. I was reading about a television show “White Collar Brawlers.” On this show, a about the journey of life reflected through boxing,  two office adversaries push themselves to the limit, learning to the sweet sport from some of the sport’s most hardcore trainers, and then slugging it out in the ring in front of television cameras

On the show, one of the trainers James “Country” Thornwell talks about why he focuses on footwork when training boxers, “…when you build a house you build from the basement up. If a trainer doesn’t start you out by working your feet, get a different one. Everyone just wants to see the hands fly, but it’s more than that. Once you’re conditioned, then you’ll learn to jab.”

I thought about what he said here and applied it to my thoughts on why game based thinking is so essential to living an effective, efficient, productive and struggle free life.

““…when you build a house you build from the basement up. If your trainer doesn’t start you out by working your feet, get a different one. If you are not taught to think strategically even in the best of circumstances you are in big trouble. Strategic thinking is game based thinking. It integrates the logical, the rational and the intuitive. Everyone but a few smart thinkers want to get rich, have a beautiful mate,  get a nice car, get famous, and conquer the world but success is so much more than that. Even if one considers this “Stuff” a  sign of success it’s more than that.

Once you’ve learned about the game of life, the players, the game space, the rules, the penalties for cheating, who the cheaters are, how to influence them, how to define your skills and master them,  end game and such;  then you’ll master strategy  – then you’ll learn to jab.”

LifeHacking, and Ethical Thought in Problem Solving LifeHacking, and Ethical Thought in Problem Solving

I was recently at a stress management conference and there was a panel on ethics and problems solving. One of the vendors there was The New York City Chair Massage Company – www.eventschairmassage.com

This is what I learned talking to a chair massage therapist who deals with ethical issues constantly as one of the best massage therapists in New York City.

Some problems come about because we don’t understand the distinction between what is ethically right and wrong.

When I ask people about the difference between ethics and morality most do not have a distinction between these two concepts.

This distinction came to me when  I was teaching a course on hypnosis,  NLP*, stress management and leadership and someone asked if manipulating people was ethical.

This question requires more than just a yes or no answer. In my approach to problem solving and decision-making ethics and morality are different though for many social scientists they are interchangeable. It is generally agreed in most of the social sciences that morality is the study of what  makes  actions  right  and  wrong. The word ‘ethics’ is commonly used interchangeably with ‘morality’. I have always found value in applying a distinction between an individual’s sense of right and wrong (ethics) as opposed to a “group’s” definition. Ethics, in a personal sense of right and wrong may go against a morality imposed from the group onto the individual.

When strategizing to solve a problem, ethical behavior is a reflection of a person’s intent to act whereas morality becomes the rule of the game as imposed on all the players. This distinction becomes important when exploring ideas such as fair play or cheating.

There are many theories concerning morality and ethics. The practical element  of  all  this can become very tricky, and there are many ethical theories that deal with  complex  issues  related  to  perspective, duty, obligation,  personal or cultural values, codes of conduct  and social mores.

This is especially so when one is forced into a Zero Sum Game* where there can only be one winner.

What is Murphy’s Law and How Can You Lifehack It?

What is Murphy’s Law and How Can You Lifehack It?

In my corporate stress management business  – www.EventsChairMassage.com – We are always dealing with small challenges that can grown into big problems. This is what Murphy’s law means to us.

People often use the term “Murphy’s Law” someone flippantly. More often than not it is an excuse for someone who is a lazy thinker or who is in the clutches of some form of cognitive bias.

To be specific, Murphy’s law is an adage or epigram that is typically stated as: Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

It is a way of describing the perceived perversity of the universe.

The concept is as old as humanity and can be used specifically to increase or decrease effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity depending on the view and perspective of the individual applying the concept.

Before the term “Murphy’s Law even came into usage there was a version of the law, not yet generalized or bearing that name, in a report by Alfred Holt at an 1877 meeting of an engineering society.

Relating the concept to engineering the report promoted the concept that anything that can go wrong at sea generally does go wrong sooner or later, so it is not to be wondered that owners prefer the safe to the scientific …. Sufficient stress can hardly be laid on the advantages of simplicity. The human factor cannot be safely neglected in planning machinery. If attention is to be obtained, the engine must be such that the engineer will be disposed to attend to it.

Mathematician Augustus De Morgan wrote on June 23, 1866:  “The first experiment already illustrates a truth of the theory, well confirmed by practice, what-ever can happen will happen if we make trials enough.

This concept appears in many different areas of life. For example, the British stage magician Nevil Maskelyne wrote in 1908:

“It is an experience common to all men to find that, on any special occasion, such as the production of a magical effect for the first time in public, everything that can go wrong will go wrong. Whether we must attribute this to the malignity of matter or to the total depravity of inanimate things, whether the exciting cause is hurry, worry, or what not, the fact remains.

In 1948, humorist Paul Jennings coined the term resistentialism, a jocular play on resistance and existentialism, to describe “seemingly spiteful behavior manifested by inanimate objects”, where objects that cause problems (like lost keys or a runaway bouncy ball) are said to exhibit a high degree of malice toward humans.

The contemporary form of Murphy’s law goes back as far as 1952, as an epigraph to a mountaineering book by John Sack, who described it as an “ancient mountaineering adage”:

Anything that can possibly go wrong, does.

Fred R. Shapiro, the editor of the Yale Book of Quotations, has shown that in 1952 the adage was called “Murphy’s law” in a book by Anne Roe, quoting an unnamed physicist: he described [it] as “Murphy’s law or the fourth law of thermodynamics” (actually there were only three last I heard) which states: “If anything can go wrong, it will.”

Ultimately, the person with an interest in becoming more effective, efficient and productive and who know how to use game Theory and game based models can both reduce the likelihood Murphy’s Law taking place sooner rather than later and may even predict when it is likely to take place.

This fine article explores how to use Murphy’s Law to prosper in all areas of your life.

What Does KISS – “Keep it Simple, Stupid” Mean?

The Man Who Created KISS – Keep it Simple, Stupid” Kelly Johnson’s. His  14 Rules of Management

Kelly Johnson was one of the greatest aeronautical engineers of the 20th century. Johnson is sometimes cited as the originator of the KISS principle, and his famed “down-to-brass-tacks” management style was summed up by his motto, “Be quick, be quiet, and be on time” and “KISSS – Keep it simple Stupid”.He ran Skunk Works by “Kelly’s 14 Rules”: I often use his ideas in many of my businesses and it is because of his that my stress management company inclidng the Corporate Chair Massage Company  – www.eventschairmassage has been so successful.

Here are his 14 Rules:

  1. The Skunk Works manager must be delegated practically complete control of his program in all aspects. He should report to a division president or higher.
  2. Strong but small project offices must be provided both by the military and industry.
  3. The number of people having any connection with the project must be restricted in an almost vicious manner. Use a small number of good people (10% to 25% compared to the so-called normal systems).
  4. A very simple drawing and drawing release system with great flexibility for making changes must be provided.
  5. There must be a minimum number of reports required, but important work must be recorded thoroughly.
  6. There must be a monthly cost review covering not only what has been spent and committed but also projected costs to the conclusion of the program. Don’t have the books 90 days late, and don’t surprise the customer with sudden overruns.
  7. The contractor must be delegated and must assume more than normal responsibility to get good vendor bids for subcontract on the project. Commercial bid procedures are very often better than military ones.
  8. The inspection system as currently used by the Skunk Works, which has been approved by both the Air Force and Navy, meets the intent of existing military requirements and should be used on new projects. Push more basic inspection responsibility back to subcontractors and vendors. Don’t duplicate so much inspection.
  9. The contractor must be delegated the authority to test his final product in flight. He can and must test it in the initial stages. If he doesn’t, he rapidly loses his competency to design other vehicles.
  10. The specifications applying to the hardware must be agreed to well in advance of contracting. The Skunk Works practice of having a specification section stating clearly which important military specification items will not knowingly be complied with and reasons therefore is highly recommended.
  11. Funding a program must be timely so that the contractor doesn’t have to keep running to the bank to support government projects.
  12. There must be mutual trust between the military project organization and the contractor with very close cooperation and liaison on a day-to-day basis. This cuts down misunderstanding and correspondence to an absolute minimum.
  13. Access by outsiders to the project and its personnel must be strictly controlled by appropriate security measures.
  14. Because only a few people will be used in engineering and most other areas, ways must be provided to reward good performance by pay not based on the number of personnel supervised.

Kelly had a 15th rule that he passed on by word of mouth. According to the book “Skunk Works” the 15th rule is: “Starve before doing business with the damned Navy. They don’t know what the hell they want and will drive you up a wall before they break either your heart or a more exposed part of your anatomy.”

Corporate Chair Massage and Worse Case-Scenarios

Much of my work in Stress management work in NYC involves corporate chair massage, also known as onsite massage of seated massage.

Many companies create holistic and wellness fairs to educate their employees and give them more skills for effective decision making. Any type of mobile massage can provide that positive edge that increases productivity and reduces absenteeism because physical health influences mental clarity and corporate chair massage is an effective approach to ending the spiral of stress  though merging the mind and body.

This work is especially useful for those dealing with worse-case scenarios.

A worst-case scenario is a concept in risk management wherein the planner, in planning for potential disasters, considers the most severe possible outcome that can reasonably be projected to occur in a given situation. Conceiving of worst-case scenarios is a common form of strategic planning, specifically scenario planning, to prepare for and minimize contingencies that could result in accidentsquality problems, or other issues.

The worst-case scenario is “one of the most commonly used alternative scenarios”. A risk manager may request “a conservative risk estimate representing a worst-case scenario” in order to determine the latitude they may exercise in planning steps to reduce risks. Generally, a worst-case scenario “is settled upon by agreeing that a given worst case is bad enough. However, it is important to recognize that no worst-case scenario is truly without potential nasty surprises”.  In other words, “[a] “worst-case scenario” is never the worst case”, both because situations may arise that no planner could reasonably foresee  and because a given worst-case scenario is likely to consider only contingencies expected to arise in connection with a particular disaster. The worst-case scenario devised by a seismologist might be a particularly bad earthquake, and the worst-case scenario devised by a meteorologist might be a particularly bad hurricane, but it is unlikely that either of them will devise a scenario where a particularly bad storm occurs at the same time as a particularly bad earthquake.

The definition of a worst-case scenario varies by the field to which it is being applied. For example, in environmental engineering“, “[a] worst-case scenario is defined as the release of the largest quantity of a regulated substance from a single vessel or process line failure that results in the greatest distance to an endpoint”. In this field, “[a]s in other fields, the worst-case scenario is a useful device when low probability events may result in a catastrophe that must be avoided even at great cost, but in most health risk assessments, a worst-case scenario is essentially a type of bounding estimate”. In computer science, the best, worst, and average case of a given algorithm express what the resource usage is at least, at most and on average, respectively. For many individuals, a worst case scenario is one that would result in their own death.

The story below is an example of a worst case scenario where clear thinking saved a life in a worst case scenario.

Big Data, Game Theory and Lifehacking

In order to become a successful lifehacker you have to merge hack thinking with Applied Game Thinking.

news-1511502__180

A lifehack is an old concept refitted with a new name – a strategy or technique adopted in order to manage one’s time and daily activities in a more efficient way. Essentially it is a merging of systematic thrift and frugality merged with time management and priority planning. Each hack is like a chess moves towards solving a problem.

king-1745093__180

Applied Game Thinking, is a system of strategizing to maximize one’s potential at the lowest possible cost. These game strategies are often created as a response to a competitive situation where a “player” in the game of life is faced with complex challenges, problems, obstacles and constraints (CPOC) Applied Game Thinking is a strongly influenced and loosely applied take on Game Theory which has garnered researchers over a dozen Noble Prizes. When you are able to merge lifehacks with applied game thinking as a foundation you will be able to troubleshoot virtually any challenge.

In the end you will save, money, save time and create greater happiness.

Here is a ”Big Data” Hack:

big-data-1084656__180

The more effective you are at gathering information and trading it for non-cash resources like influence, or time,  the less cash you need to spend in order to get the things you need. The hack here is to create and apply a simple but effective system for gathering, organizing, and using information – essentially asking the right questions, of the right people at the right time!

An old cartoon called Pogo once had a character saying, “We have discovered the enemy and it is us!” How true that is!

Following is a simple assessment exercise to help isolate obstacles that can lead to ibstacles, challenges, problems bottlenecks in your lifehack  Game Theory system.

Ask yourself which of these descriptions applies to you. Write down how frequently one of these sentences describes you, ranging from “not at all” to “always.”

Winning The Game Of Life: A Primer On Lewis Harrison’s Applied Game Theory

Here is a simple Lifehack you can use while you figure out how you have been sabotaging yourself:

oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

A Chef’s Kitchen Hack: Save Money on Expensive Bread Crumbs:

  • When you buy a loaf of whole grain bread (the best kind nutritionally), or bake your own bread, take few slices, let them get dried out until they are hard.
  • Put in a blender or food processor (or pulverize with a hammer if you are that low-tech).
  • Add garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt or low sodium Vegit powder.

Cost about about 50 cents versus commercial breadcrumbs about $2.50

A Quick dish – Stuffed peppers: The picture below says it all

Investing and Game Theory

Question: What is the best way to start investing using Game Theory if you have limited financial resources?

Lewis Harrison answers:  As in any other domain using game theory to invest involves knowing how to strategize. Game theory is “the study of mathematical models of conflict and cooperation between intelligent rational decision-makers.” Game theory is mainly used in economics, investing, political science, and psychology, as well as logic, computer science, biology and poker.

Let’s begin by exploring what it means to be an investor. To invest is to allocate money (or sometimes another resource, such as time, space, information or influence) in the expectation of some benefit in the future. In finance, the expected future benefit from investment is called a return (to investment). The return may consist of capital gain and/or investment income, including dividends,  interest, rental income etc. The economic return to an investment is the appropriately discounted value of the future returns to the investment.

Investment generally results in acquiring an asset, also called an investment. If the asset is available at a price worth investing, it is normally expected either to generate income, or to appreciate in value, so that it can be sold at a higher price (or both).

Investors generally expect higher returns from riskier investments. Financial assets range from low-risk, low-return investments, such as high-grade government bonds, to those with higher risk and higher expected commensurate reward, such as emerging markets stock investments.

Investors, particularly novices, are often advised to adopt an investment strategy and diversify their portfolio.

Diversification has the statistical effect of reducing overall risk.

To be an effective investor there are three elements that one must master:

  1. Knowing how to connect the dots accurately: We live in an interdisciplinary world. And the factors that make something a good or bad investment are complex. If you are well read in a wide range of areas you will come up with a more expansive understanding of these factors and ask a wider set of questions. This will lead to better choices as well as solutions to investment problems.
  2. Information and Influence: If your financial resources are limited you can leverage qualities like time, space and information to get you access to game changers, influencers and other “power-players.” The key element in this is getting information and merging it with clear critical thinking skills. You need to be reading the daily newspaper including specific columns. I follow the BBC, Al Jazeera, CNN, Fox News, the NY Times, the Washington Post, and most of all the Economist. I also follow various news feeds such as Quartz and Digg.
  3. Break out of you own Cognitive Biases. Acognitive bias is a mistake in reasoning, evaluating, remembering, or other cognitive process, often occurring as a result of holding onto one’s preferences and beliefs regardless of contrary information. Cognitive biases will effect investment decisions because they relate to memory, reasoning, and decision-making. The more informed you are and the more you network among those with similar beliefs and interests the more cognitive bias is likely to influence your thinking. This means that in order to be an effective investor you must break out of the box and step out of the bubble into new ways of seeing the investing market-place.

Cause and Effect, Karma, The Butterfly Effect and Tipping Points

I received an interesting article on cause and effect today from a friend.

Critical mass

This is not a superficial subject of inquiry. I use many elements concerning cause and effect in my mentoring, speaking and teaching on game Based Thinking.

The article discussed many ideas related to cause and effect. It started with the idea of karma and moved on the quantum physics and many other ideas.

Karma essentially means that all of your actions will have equal repercussions that affect you. The basic theory is that the universe runs according to certain laws, and one of these laws is ’cause and effect.’ The laws (known as Dharma in Buddhism) decide what affect is received from a given cause. Karma is the ’cause’ part of this theory. In other words, your actions – mental, vocal and physical are your Karma (plural).  In essence, you do are rewarded or punished for what you have done. You simply receive the effect of it. There are many theories and approaches to understanding karma and your belief in one over another of these theories doesn’t mean it is true. The fact that you believe that selfless service will help ‘improve’ your Karma doesn’t mean that it will, and the belief that all of your actions will have equal repercussions affecting you may not be true either.

It seems that many who see themselves as spiritual seekers of one type or another can’t shake this need to believe in Karma. Unfortunately, it is our own mental constructs that convince us that we can observe any aspect of life and accurately distinguish between associated events and cycles of cause and effect. From a short-term perspective, we can look at our own lives and create a narrative that says, “We are affected by reactions to past actions we have taken.”  Of course, in the larger scheme of things, life is much more chaotic and messy than you would think, and even though the universe is a dance of action and reaction, there are too many other things going on that you can neither see, nor even measure.

In my mind and experience there is always cause and effect. Of course it is not always linear or domino like. In quantum thinking the place to begin that exploration is with Christopher Alexander and his concepts on Pattern Language (You can wiki either or both).

When connecting all of this to brain hemisphere integration (Right Brain/Left Brain Thinking)  the expert is the neuroscientist Julie Bolte Taylor. She had a stroke and kept notes on what was happening as the stroke unfolded. Really wild stuff!

Brain

Here is information on her work including a TED talk.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jill_Bolte_Taylor

https://www.ted.com/speakers/jill_bolte_taylor

When exploring cause and effect in game based thinking the places I explore are not only black swan but also critical mass theory and butterfly effect

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_mass_(sociodynamics)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butterfly_effect

This is all exciting stuff for the visionary digital thinker.

Thanks for sharing my ideas.

A Problem Related to Spirituality: Understanding the Concept of Free Will

Until the End of May these blogs will focus on problems related to creating a spiritual life.

Lewis Answers: One of the most commonly discussed ideas among thinkers great and small is whether human have freedom of choice or is everything we do predestined? Historically, there have been two schools of thought concerning whether or not we have free choice. 1. Determinism: This is the idea that for everything that happens there are conditions that dictate that, given those conditions, nothing else could happen. 2: Metaphysical libertarianism: Implies that though there are many factors, variables and events that cross our paths the individual may be able to take more than one possible course of action even under this set of circumstances. Metaphysical libertarianism is concerned with how something is known rather than what is known.

The principle of free will has religious, ethical, and scientific implications especially for a student of the Wisdom Path. Recent  neuroscientific findings regarding free will may suggest different ways of predicting human behavior, which is an essential factor in the creation of life strategies.

Even if free will exists there are always going to be constraints that define how we are able to make choices such as physical constraints (e.g. chains or imprisonment), social constraints (e.g. threat of punishment or censure), or psychological constraints (e.g. compulsions or phobias). In fact, some important thinkers concerning this discussion (compatibilists) will often assert that determinism is not just compatible with free will, but actually necessary for it.

In the end there is actually no way to know if there is or not free will. The illusion of ordinary life convinces us that we are free to choose but there is much evidence that could prove that this is not the case. The best one can do is live daily applying the four pillars that define the Wisdom Practice – Meditation, the study of koans, chop would and carry water, laugh sing, dance and be silent.
