What is Murphy’s Law and How Can You Lifehack It?

What is Murphy’s Law and How Can You Lifehack It?

In my corporate stress management business  – www.EventsChairMassage.com – We are always dealing with small challenges that can grown into big problems. This is what Murphy’s law means to us.

People often use the term “Murphy’s Law” someone flippantly. More often than not it is an excuse for someone who is a lazy thinker or who is in the clutches of some form of cognitive bias.

To be specific, Murphy’s law is an adage or epigram that is typically stated as: Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

It is a way of describing the perceived perversity of the universe.

The concept is as old as humanity and can be used specifically to increase or decrease effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity depending on the view and perspective of the individual applying the concept.

Before the term “Murphy’s Law even came into usage there was a version of the law, not yet generalized or bearing that name, in a report by Alfred Holt at an 1877 meeting of an engineering society.

Relating the concept to engineering the report promoted the concept that anything that can go wrong at sea generally does go wrong sooner or later, so it is not to be wondered that owners prefer the safe to the scientific …. Sufficient stress can hardly be laid on the advantages of simplicity. The human factor cannot be safely neglected in planning machinery. If attention is to be obtained, the engine must be such that the engineer will be disposed to attend to it.

Mathematician Augustus De Morgan wrote on June 23, 1866:  “The first experiment already illustrates a truth of the theory, well confirmed by practice, what-ever can happen will happen if we make trials enough.

This concept appears in many different areas of life. For example, the British stage magician Nevil Maskelyne wrote in 1908:

“It is an experience common to all men to find that, on any special occasion, such as the production of a magical effect for the first time in public, everything that can go wrong will go wrong. Whether we must attribute this to the malignity of matter or to the total depravity of inanimate things, whether the exciting cause is hurry, worry, or what not, the fact remains.

In 1948, humorist Paul Jennings coined the term resistentialism, a jocular play on resistance and existentialism, to describe “seemingly spiteful behavior manifested by inanimate objects”, where objects that cause problems (like lost keys or a runaway bouncy ball) are said to exhibit a high degree of malice toward humans.

The contemporary form of Murphy’s law goes back as far as 1952, as an epigraph to a mountaineering book by John Sack, who described it as an “ancient mountaineering adage”:

Anything that can possibly go wrong, does.

Fred R. Shapiro, the editor of the Yale Book of Quotations, has shown that in 1952 the adage was called “Murphy’s law” in a book by Anne Roe, quoting an unnamed physicist: he described [it] as “Murphy’s law or the fourth law of thermodynamics” (actually there were only three last I heard) which states: “If anything can go wrong, it will.”

Ultimately, the person with an interest in becoming more effective, efficient and productive and who know how to use game Theory and game based models can both reduce the likelihood Murphy’s Law taking place sooner rather than later and may even predict when it is likely to take place.

This fine article explores how to use Murphy’s Law to prosper in all areas of your life.

How to Lifehack

It is my experience that there are certain qualities that define virtually all human behavior. One of these qualities is to strategize ways to maximize our untapped potential and do so at the lowest possible physical, emotional and economic cost especially when interacting with others people.  To a young millennial this is nothing more than a “lifehack”.  To me it is more accurately described as a lifehack game because game thinking is the most effective, efficient and productive way to achieve this goal. Looking for a short-cut is one thing; doing this by mimicking the thought and behavior patterns we exhibit when playing games is something else altogether.

As I have stated earlier one way to view these human thought and behavior patterns is as a game.  In such a game the more one who prospers at the lowest possible cost to themselves and others wins. Prospering does not need to be defined in financial or material terms. It can relate to emotional well-being, clarity of thought, service to others and many other ways.

Much of life is driven by sets of ideas and numbers that describe the past, present, or future states of things, particularly strategic interactions between two or more individuals or groups (players) in situations containing set rules and outcomes. Game theory is the process of observing these interactions and modeling them to make effective decisions. Applied Game Thinking is a simplification of these ideas.

In life we often model or copy what we have seen or experienced before.  This process is known as “modeling” among game thinkers. Modeling strategies in this way it is not about solving problems as much as it is about applications and solutions.

In an ideal world Game theory and game thinking would be a waste of time. The extraordinary person would simply do what Lao Tzu, the great Chinese–Taoist Sage did. Once he realized that most people were just clueless, and would never get “It”, he left town, went to a mountain community with a gatekeeper and hung out with all the other wise men and woman, visionaries and sages. There they could all live their lives motivated by love, emotional balance, clarity of thought, compassion and personal contentment. Visionary thinkers of this type have no interest in living a “zero sum life” motivated by anger, greed, lust, vanity, attachment and ego. The type of that seems to motivate many.

Sadly we do not live in an ideal world. We have to deal with challenges, obstacles and constraints, many caused by other people, many of them dysfunctional to the max. In addition we must confront our own inner demons. All this leads to problems that might have been avoided. Whether it is genetics that defines the games we play or how we play them, play them we must – or rather lifehack them we must!

Effective Lifehacking

If you are looking for shortcuts to getting things done, this is the blog for you!

assembly-850845__340

There is a saying that the truth you ignore will come back to bite you on the butt! As you address specific obstacles, bottlenecks or constraints, be prepared to subordinate any further steps you plan to take in your lifehacking process until the issue or any other bottleneck is resolved.

abstract-1861459__340

Discovering obstacles, bottlenecks or constraints (OB and C) that are slowing down your lifehack is an important skill to develop. This basic skill can be developed through the use of what are called assessment tools. The most popular low tech approach to assessments is the questionnaire.  Questionnaires, can help you recognize your strengths and weaknesses as well as previously unknown and unrecognized “OB and Cs”. Once these have been isolated they can be eliminated or compensated for.  This will  result in a shifting of the bottleneck. Without the obstacle and the bottleneck to slow the process, the lifehack will be completed successfully.

In previous Hacks on bottlenecks, we learned that a lifehacker needs to understand cause and effect and have the ability to recognize and isolate an obstacle or bottleneck when it appears. There are five key steps for eliminating obstacles, bottlenecks or constraints. These are to:

how-to-hack-your-life-front-757x1024

  • Identify the obstacles and bottleneck by evaluating all ELRs.
  • Identify obstacles, and constraint to increase efficiency.
  • Minimize all other resources that are connected to the obstacle and the bottleneck.
  • Expand the useful properties of the obstacle as a way of eliminating the bottleneck or at the very least increasing the capacity of the bottleneck.
  • Regularly repeat the process since a new obstacle may arise to create a new bottleneck that may require further action.

Through assessing, isolating and removing “OB and Cs” you are isolating the root factor for the problem.

Lifehack!  In the end you will save, money, save time and create greater happiness.

Big Data, Game Theory and Lifehacking

In order to become a successful lifehacker you have to merge hack thinking with Applied Game Thinking.

news-1511502__180

A lifehack is an old concept refitted with a new name – a strategy or technique adopted in order to manage one’s time and daily activities in a more efficient way. Essentially it is a merging of systematic thrift and frugality merged with time management and priority planning. Each hack is like a chess moves towards solving a problem.

king-1745093__180

Applied Game Thinking, is a system of strategizing to maximize one’s potential at the lowest possible cost. These game strategies are often created as a response to a competitive situation where a “player” in the game of life is faced with complex challenges, problems, obstacles and constraints (CPOC) Applied Game Thinking is a strongly influenced and loosely applied take on Game Theory which has garnered researchers over a dozen Noble Prizes. When you are able to merge lifehacks with applied game thinking as a foundation you will be able to troubleshoot virtually any challenge.

In the end you will save, money, save time and create greater happiness.

Here is a ”Big Data” Hack:

big-data-1084656__180

The more effective you are at gathering information and trading it for non-cash resources like influence, or time,  the less cash you need to spend in order to get the things you need. The hack here is to create and apply a simple but effective system for gathering, organizing, and using information – essentially asking the right questions, of the right people at the right time!

An Attitude Adjustment

Thanks for visiting The Harrison Center. Please explore our website and our many blog posts. Each page has something different to offer  the creative thinker with a passion for ideas.

Lewis Harrison – Founder and Director

I was recently re-reading The Power of Positive Thinking By Norman Vincent Peale and the Secret. I also spent time this week with a few old friends and clients who have crappy attitudes about life. They are “glass is half empty” types and it got me to thinking about the holiday season and how many people find this time of year depressing. It also reminded me again about the role of attitude and perspective on how we experience life. Now I’m not going to give you’re a sermon on attitude or bore you with a long blog on how to get a positive attitude but it did get me to contemplating on the subject.

Then I I received an e-mail from my old friend Mark Braunstein. I know Mark about thirty five years and send him the blogs that you are receiving from me. He is an author, philosopher, activist, scholar, entrepreneur and incredibly positive about life and living. . He also has some pretty extreme physical challenges. You see many years ago he went hiking and dove off a small bridge over a stream. Lots of people jump off this bridge into this stream all the time. Mark did it too (he is a pretty good athlete). When he came up he realized that he couldn’t feel his legs.

But Mark not being able to feel his legs is not the point of this blog. Mark has a pretty good attitude so the fact that he can’t feel his legs is just what “is” The point is that some people have a positive attitude about life and living and some people have a crappy attitude about life and living.

I have learned as a life and success coach and as an “expert” on Applied Game Theory that attitude counts for a lot concerning how we make choices in life and how wise these choices are.

This isn’t some half-baked motivational philosophy. Numerous studies show that this is so. People with positive attitudes have better marriages, more friends, make more money and die happier than people with crappy attitudes.

Now back to Mark Braunstein.

Well about a year after Mark’s accident (he’ll correct me if I’m wrong) network television did a show on extreme events that happen to people and that get caught on video. It happened that Mark’s friend had video-taped him jumping off that bridge. We had a party at my apartment in Manhattan. Mark came in his spanking new wheel chair and a good time was had by all as we watched the TV show. Yup, there was mark jumping off the bridge. Yup there was Mark coming to the surface realizing that he couldn’t feel his legs.  Eventually the party ended as all parties must and Mark went back to living his life with some new and unexpected challenges. He became an activist for the legalization of medical marijuana, testified at government hearings and generally did what he did before his accident; -lived a good life and made a positive difference in the lives of others which he continues to do.

So the essence of today’s blog is this…If you have a crappy attitude get rid of it. If you can’t get rid of it replace it with a positive attitude.

You might say, “Lew it’s not that easy. My parents had a crappy attitude, my siblings had crappy attitudes and I came from a damaged childhood where everyone and everything was designed to support the development of a crappy attitude.” You might say that.”

I feel your pain!

Now the visionary psychiatrist who created the foundations behind Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and Tony Robbins ideas was named Milton Erickson. Erickson, who created Ericksonian Hypnosis, said that some people respond to visual influence and others to auditory. If you happen to have a crappy attitude and would like to have a positive attitude this music video by Billy Joel might be of value. It is the song “Your Only Human: Don’t forget Your Second Wind” The link is below. I have included the lyrics in case you want to sing along
