What Does KISS – “Keep it Simple, Stupid” Mean?

The Man Who Created KISS – Keep it Simple, Stupid” Kelly Johnson’s. His  14 Rules of Management

Kelly Johnson was one of the greatest aeronautical engineers of the 20th century. Johnson is sometimes cited as the originator of the KISS principle, and his famed “down-to-brass-tacks” management style was summed up by his motto, “Be quick, be quiet, and be on time” and “KISSS – Keep it simple Stupid”.He ran Skunk Works by “Kelly’s 14 Rules”: I often use his ideas in many of my businesses and it is because of his that my stress management company inclidng the Corporate Chair Massage Company  – www.eventschairmassage has been so successful.

Here are his 14 Rules:

  1. The Skunk Works manager must be delegated practically complete control of his program in all aspects. He should report to a division president or higher.
  2. Strong but small project offices must be provided both by the military and industry.
  3. The number of people having any connection with the project must be restricted in an almost vicious manner. Use a small number of good people (10% to 25% compared to the so-called normal systems).
  4. A very simple drawing and drawing release system with great flexibility for making changes must be provided.
  5. There must be a minimum number of reports required, but important work must be recorded thoroughly.
  6. There must be a monthly cost review covering not only what has been spent and committed but also projected costs to the conclusion of the program. Don’t have the books 90 days late, and don’t surprise the customer with sudden overruns.
  7. The contractor must be delegated and must assume more than normal responsibility to get good vendor bids for subcontract on the project. Commercial bid procedures are very often better than military ones.
  8. The inspection system as currently used by the Skunk Works, which has been approved by both the Air Force and Navy, meets the intent of existing military requirements and should be used on new projects. Push more basic inspection responsibility back to subcontractors and vendors. Don’t duplicate so much inspection.
  9. The contractor must be delegated the authority to test his final product in flight. He can and must test it in the initial stages. If he doesn’t, he rapidly loses his competency to design other vehicles.
  10. The specifications applying to the hardware must be agreed to well in advance of contracting. The Skunk Works practice of having a specification section stating clearly which important military specification items will not knowingly be complied with and reasons therefore is highly recommended.
  11. Funding a program must be timely so that the contractor doesn’t have to keep running to the bank to support government projects.
  12. There must be mutual trust between the military project organization and the contractor with very close cooperation and liaison on a day-to-day basis. This cuts down misunderstanding and correspondence to an absolute minimum.
  13. Access by outsiders to the project and its personnel must be strictly controlled by appropriate security measures.
  14. Because only a few people will be used in engineering and most other areas, ways must be provided to reward good performance by pay not based on the number of personnel supervised.

Kelly had a 15th rule that he passed on by word of mouth. According to the book “Skunk Works” the 15th rule is: “Starve before doing business with the damned Navy. They don’t know what the hell they want and will drive you up a wall before they break either your heart or a more exposed part of your anatomy.”

Tips for Wellness Coaches

Many of those who read the RealUGuru blog are Wellness Coaches, consultants or health professionals. From 1973 to 2007 I had a private practice as a Naturopathic Practitioner in NYC. As part of this practice I had a number of Medical Doctors working with me so that I could stay on the “right side” of the law.

As part of my work we had a well-designed system of client protocols. It seems today that many Wellness Coaches have not been taught this. Here are some ideas concerning this challenge.

 

Client Protocols

  • Functional assessment – This includes traditional laboratory tests; specialized tests that quantify hormone and neurotransmitter levels; structural and postural analysis, Chinese Pulse Reading and various mental and emotional assessments.
  • Analysis and interpretation – There are two areas of inquiry required here.
  1. A review of specific symptoms.
  2. A review of testing and assessment results.

To be most effective here a team approach is recommended. This might include physicians, energy healing practitioners, nutritionists, researchers, somatic experts, naturopaths, somatic movement specialists, bodyworkers, life coaches and mental health professionals.

  • Therapy – This would be a clinical protocol that might include specific nutritional therapy and meal planning, herbal medicine, aromatherapy, homeopathy, Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, Chiropractic and/or Osteopathic Manipulation, seated or on-site chair massage, Somatic Movement Re-education, emotional counseling and life coaching, Hand-on Healing (Reiki, Polarity), meditation etc.

 

The Healing Program

Every healing program consists of three phases

  1. Entry level: The goal here is to establish a client’s baseline levels and existing chemical, structural and emotional imbalances. This is followed by a therapeutic protocol from which clinical responses can be monitored.
  2. Rebalancing: Here the client is retested to monitor the initial protocol and make adjustments as needed. This needs to be done every six to nine weeks during this phase which may last from three to nine months.
  3. Maintenance: When function has been restored, symptoms alleviated and retesting indicates that chemical, structural and emotional imbalances have been corrected then annual or semi-annual testing needs to be conducted to maintain the clients state of health.

Corporate Chair Massage and Other Part Time Careers

Some people are just not hardwired for full time, long-term employment. They like to move around, change their hours. You might even say they have a short attention span.  So what – there are lots of lucrative career opportunities for those of a more creative and at times unfocused or mildly volatile nature. Here are 11 careers I found researching the web and in an article in the AAARP Bulletin Jan – Feb 2017.

Part Time Cash

  1. Tax- Return Preparer

Skills required: Need to be good with numbers and computers

Time required: Usually Jan – April

How to get started: Contact the Big firms. Some will require you to take classes they offer in the fall.

 

  1. Ride-Hailing Driver (Uber, Lyft)

Skills required: Ability to use smart-phone Apps, good driving record, clean well operating car.

Time required: Usually Jan – April

How to get started: Check the big companie’s websites

 

  1. Park Ranger and General Seasonal State Park Jobs

Skills required: Doing what needs to be done and staying out of trouble..

Time required: These jobs are usually available during the summer tourist surge.

How to get started: Go to usajobs.gov and search “national park Service’. Also checkout Aramark a company the NPS uses for many of its concessions and other facilities.

 

  1. Tax- Return Preparer

How to get started: Contact the Big firms. Some will require you to take classes they offer in the fall.

 

  1. Direct Sales Person

Skills required: Believe it or not, salespeople make more money than any other profession in the world.  Al you need is a computer, internet access (The local library will have those), and a comfort level with calling strangers.  If you are very motivated, and a great networker you may want to explore multi-level or network marketing. These are legitimate companies (Not to be confused with Pyramid schemes which are illegal).

Time required: Pick your own hours and work from home.

How to get started: Check the big companies websites or contact the Direct selling Association for information.

 

  1. Dog Walker, Pet Sitter, Plant Waterer

Skills required: Good sense of time and responsibility

Time required: These jobs are available all year but the peak times are summer, spring break, and holidays.

How to get started: This is usually a word of mouth business.  Of course you can post flyers or notices at the local pet shop and check out local list servers. The website TaskRabbit connects people who need help getting jobs done. You can find clients there as well.

 

  1. Retail Cashier

Skills required: Good sense of time, numbers, and responsibility

Time required: Holidays are best but stores always need cashiers. Often the pay is minimum wage and be prepared for standing for long hours and much personal contact.

How to get started: Checkout the “Older & Bolder” section of the website “CoolWorks.com”> This focuses on older workers but you might find good leads there.

 

  1. Craftworker

Skills required: A passion for creativity and arts and crafts of some form and a skills in marketing and self -promotion.

Time required: Anytime

How to get started: Either you can work for someone doing piece work or start your own craft business. If you go out on your own you will need to know where the craft fairs and “pop-up” markets are. In addition there are many online markets where crafters sell their creations. The biggest are ArtFire, Etsy and Bonanza.

 

  1. Package Couriers and Associated Positions at Delivery Companies

Skills required: Ability to lift heavy packages. There are also jobs for mail sorters, truck drivers, and floor managers.

Time required: Varies, depending upon the job

How to get started: Check the big company’s websites including UPS, FedEx and similar companies

 

  1. Casual and Air Couriers

Skills required: A casual courier is an everyday traveler who informally delivers packages for shippers. The term describes an alternative delivery practice of sending items from one place to another via independent traveler. Casual couriers usually have existing travel plans before agreeing to deliver a package for a sender. Casual couriers may receive a fee directly from the shipper for delivering a package to its destination. The casual courier’s fee is typically significantly lower than traditional overnight delivery services.  Delivery costs can be substantially reduced by using a casual courier and for the courier, carrying a package may help to subsidize the cost of a trip.

To do this you must be being a responsible person with good time management and lifehacking skills especially if flying. You must be sure that what you are transporting is legal.

Time required: These jobs are usually available anytime 365 – 24/7

How to get started:  This is usually done through networking, agencies and even Craig’s List

 

  1. Trouble-Shooter and Problem Solver

Skills required: The ability to understand and apply Big Data, Collaborative Intelligence, Design Thinking, Pattern Language, Lifehacking, StreetSmarts and Management Science. You must have great people skills, influence or access to influence and delegate to others well.

Time required: Pick your own hours and work from home.

How to get started: This is pretty much what I do for a living. Solve a few problems that a lawyer, the police, a psychiatrist or Tony Soprano cannot solve and do it all legally and people will find you.

  1. Chair Massage Therapist

Skills required: Massage or Bodywork

Time required: Pick your own hours and work from home. You may need a massage or cosmetology license depending upon the state or country you are in.

How to get started: Find out state laws concerning massage. Contact companies offering corporate chair massage. They are throughout the U.S.A so if you travel you may be able to find jobs. The best places for this work is in NYC, Chicago and Las Vegas or any city with large convention centers.
